I believe in last month’s newsletter, I was talking about the drought. This month the green grass is back with the rain. I remember the first week (21 years ago) living here in Oak Hollow Park, the neighbors told us, if you don’t like the weather, don’t worry, it could change, day to day. And the neighbors were right.

Speaking of what’s right and what’s wrong … Reminds me of when I first met my wife. She was a college graduate with her psychology degree. Heck, we didn’t even speak the same language. Our daughter (a recent college graduate) tells (us) her parents relationship is a “paradox.” I don’t know about those big $10 words, but I know opposites attract. We had different personalities, different interests, different backgrounds but still managed to fall in love. After a while, when she got to know me better … My “phycologist wife” told me, “It will probably take all my life to fix you (she was talking about me, and then I knew we had a future)…

And she’s been trying her best to fix me. She suggested that women are always right and men are always wrong. So if I say that she is always right, am I wrong?

Well we’ve had a few hot days. There’s nothing like a dip in the pool or not … I noticed my pool pump had a water leak. I called a pool tech to fix it. He removed the motor, added a new shaft seal, O-ring and gasket. But the leak continued, the same as before the repairs.

That’s when I learned my pool pump was a 1980’s one-speed pool pump. Did you know, in 2021, it is against the law to purchase a new one-speed motor from anywhere? In the early 1990’s, two-speed motors became popular because they used less energy. Bad news, the only way I can replace my pool pump with another similar one-speed is … if I find a used one for sale from a private party.

I searched Facebook, Google, Craigslist, E-bay, I found some used motors but they sell fast, and I was striking out. I know, you think, just buy a new pool pump, a two-speed, or a variable – speed pool pump. They are expensive and the reconfiguration to the plumbing could mean a big labor bill because I don’t know how to install a new motor myself. The new motor & installation quotes kept going up. A new pump, plus installation, first quote was $1400, then $2,000, and even quotes for $2,500. I started to have a meltdown.

My daughter graduated from College last Saturday and now we got some school loans to repay, so I’m talking to different pool companies, asking if anyone has a useable, discarded, one-speed pool pump.

I’m searching online, and I finally found a new posting, a used one-speed pool pump, and I snatched it!

Now I got to find out how much it’s going to cost to remove my old damage pump housing ( had a crack) and replace it with the new-found used pool pump housing and reattach it to my original motor. I called a few pool companies but they weren’t too interested in my problem because it’s a busy time of year.

I noticed a neighbor had a pool company working on their pool and I asked if they could spare a few minutes to tell me if my new-found (used) pool pump (housing) will work with my original motor. The pool tech told me yes, it could work, then told me he could install it for me, if I was interested after he finished what he was doing. I was interested and my pool pump is running good again. But I did go a couple weeks without using the pool pump and my pool water turned green, but that’s okay, with a working pool pump motor, my old pool will be blue again soon. Hopefully, you don’t encounter problems like I do.
