A motorist was driving past a Texas ranch when a calf suddenly wandered onto the road. Unable to stop in time, he accidentally hit and killed the calf. Wanting to do the right thing, he drove up to the ranch house to inform the owner.
“I’m really sorry,” he said. “I hit one of your calves. How much was it worth?”
The rancher sighed and replied, “Well, right now, about $200. But in six years, that calf would have been worth $900. So, I’m out $900.”
The motorist nodded thoughtfully, pulled out his checkbook, and began writing. Handing the check to the rancher, he said with a grin, “Here you go, a check for $900, postdated six years from now.”
